Launch Pad: Ford Tourneo/Transit

0805 Ford Tourneo:Transit 1

Perfect people mover

Reuben van Niekerk

The Ford Transit is absolutely an icon in the van market in Europe, with about 250 000 sold there annually. So its surprising that it took so long to get to South Africa where competitor models such as the Toyota Quantam, VW Kombi and more recently the Hyundai H1 have had the market to themselves.

Based on the success of the Transit, the dynamic new Ford Tourneo Custom is a stylish people mover that offers car-like comfort and driving dynamics. With its tasteful appearance, smart technologies and outstanding fuel economy.

The eight-seater Tourneo Custom is available in a short wheelbase and a long wheelbase version, both of which provide generous space for people and luggage. The additional length of the LWB version translates into extra luggage space behind the third seat row.

At a height of less than two metres, the Tourneo Custom also comfortably complies with most car park height limits. This advantage is retained when the vehicle is fitted with the innovative deployable integrated roof rack system, which is seamlessly integrated into the roof and can easily be raised or lowered when required.

Tourneo Custom models offer twin side sliding doors as standard, with running boards below the doors for improved low level step access, as well as a strong visual differentiation.

The Tourneo Custom also brings car-like style and sophistication to the people-mover segment with an interior constructed from high quality materials. The stylish, sculpted driver-focussed instrument panel features technologies closely-related to those found in the Ford passenger car range. The cockpit is further enhanced by a highly adjustable driving position with the steering column modifiable for reach and rake.

The seats in the two rear rows can be easily folded into multiple configurations and removed in segments or completely – in total there are over 30 seating permutations to suit any occasion. All seating positions provide integral three-point lap and shoulder style seat belts.

Air-conditioning is a standard fitment for front seat occupants while a separate air conditioning unit for the rear compartment is available as part of an option pack.

Also available is Ford’s acclaimed SYNC voice-activated, in-car connectivity system that enables mobile phones and music players to be connected to the vehicle and operated by voice control.

The Tourneo Custom brings a new level of car-like driver appeal to its segment with dynamics and performance which have been carefully tuned to reflect the same natural and easy-to-drive character that customers appreciate in Ford’s car range.

Tuning of the suspension components and steering system has resulted in good ride comfort. Like the new Ford Focus, the Tourneo Custom also features the latest Electronic Stability Program technology with Torque Vectoring Control for enhanced traction and stability.

The Tourneo Custom is the first new vehicle in its class to achieve a maximum five-star safety rating from independent vehicle safety organisation Euro NCAP.

The Tourneo Custom is powered by Ford’s latest 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine which is available in two power ratings: 74kW on Ambiente derivatives and 92kW on Trend derivatives. Both are mated to a six-speed manual transmission delivering fuel consumption figures of 6.5 l/100 km on a combined cycle.

The Ford Transit Custom brings new levels of style, driver appeal and functionality to the one-tonne commercial vehicle market.

In addition to offering maximum load volume (6.0m3 SAE with full bulkhead fitted, 6.8m3 SAE with LWB) that exceeds that of its closest competitors, the load area of the Transit Custom has been carefully optimised to offer more space and more convenience than any of its rivals.  Key features and innovations include:

To provide customers with a wide range of payload options from 600-1,400kg, Transit Custom is available with multiple GVM options.

The 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi engine is offered in three variations in the Transit. The 74kW model offers 310Nm of torque from just 1 300rpm, the 92kW version offers 350Nm at 1450rpm while the high-powered 114kW version offers 385Nm at 1 600rpm.
