The esses on the Club Circuit at the Dubai Autodrome are made up of a tricky sequence of uphill left-right flicks that require serious curb hopping if you’re after a good laptime. And it’s that short 300-metre stretch of tar, edged by red and white concrete covered with tell-tale rubber scuff-marks, that illustrate the sheer brilliance of Porsche’s new Cayman.

We’re at the Autodrome to familiarise ourselves with the new coupé in standard and S forms, and I’m belting along behind a hot Panamera Turbo S pace car that’s there to familiarise us out-of-towners with the track layout.

With better-than-Boxster tautness by virtue of its coupe roof, ‘my’ S rides those curbs like a real racer. And the driver aids, including PSM and torque vectoring, allow just enough leeway for excitement, along with the perfect amount of intervention to ensure that I remain on course behind the Panamera ahead, which is being manhandled around by a Porsche professional driver.

I’ll have more to say about the two Cayman models in the May issue of Accelerate, but for now I just have to tell you that the best simply got better.

To go with that superb handling and steering, there’s a line-up of two great engines. The 3,4 in the S has 239 kW on tap at a dizzy 7 400 r/min and propels the car to 100 km/h in 4,7 seconds, going on to a top speed of 280 km/h. Figures for the 2,7-litre standard car are 202 kW at 7 400, 0-100 km/h in 5,4 seconds and a top whack of 266. Fast, compact and agile, the Cayman in any form is truly a king among sports coupés.
