More images of the new McLaren hypercar, the P1, were revealed during a tour of the Middle East. These pictures, taken at the Bahrain International Circuit, come ahead of the car’s launch in the United Arab Emirates. The tour is aimed to attract potential buyers – no more than 500 P1s will be built, but the car is yet to sell out.
The P1, the spiritual successor to McLaren’s iconic F1, will rival the Ferrari F150 and the Porsche 918 Spyder, and the goal is for the machine to be the best driver’s car in the world. Formula One-inspired engineering has been made use of in the car’s development and it boasts advanced aerodynamics and carbon fibre construction. An estimated power-to-weight ratio of almost 450 kW per ton indicates a total power output of around 540 kW. The P1 will also make use of hybrid technology.
The car’s interior is said to be stripped out and made primarily from carbon fibre, but McLaren hasn’t forgone the niceties with the P1. It still has satellite navigation, climate control and a sound system. That’s important, because according to Pail Mackenzie, programme director at McLaren, the P1 can be driven in “great comfort and refinement” despite its performance credentials. The hypercar’s public début will take place at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
