VW reveals Golf R Cabriolet details

0802 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet 1

Do you reckon a Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet is a little over the top? Well, VW obviously doesn’t, and the German marquee has just revealed the details of the speedy drop-top, and perhaps it’s about time the firm did something a little silly.

Mechanically, it’s pretty much the same as the hatchback Golf R, meaning under its bonnet lies a 200 kW 2,0-litre turbo mill that’ll get it to 100 km/h in 6,4 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h and power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed DSG ’box. Visually, it’s differentiated by the abundance of ‘R’ badges, as well as a gloss-black grill and rear diffuser and chrome exhausts. It also sits 25 mm lower than other Golf Cabriolets and rolls on standard 18-inch or ioptional 19-inch alloys.

Unique to the cabriolet version, of course, is its roof, which can operate at speeds of up to 30 km/h. Like the car, it’s fast. It takes just 9,5 seconds to drop and 11 seconds to be raised. Inside, there are more ‘R’ logos, including in the headrests, and four individual sports seats. Aluminium trim and pedals and contrasting grey stitching on the steering wheel, handbrake and gear lever further differentiate the R from your standard Golf Cabriolet.

So, with the Golf R Cabriolet you get VW’s phenomenal build quality, the R’s brilliant pace and the wind in your hair faster than those other Golf Cab drivers. It’s something a little different, and we applaud VW for that.
