Peugeot is set to take on the Nissan Juke with the arrival of the 2008 supermini SUV, which will have its public début at the Geneva Motor Show in March. It’s not the only car that will fight established rivals like the Juke and the Mini Countryman – The Opel Mokka, Ford Ecosport and Renault Captur will also be involved in the fight.
Details of the 208-based 2008 are few and far between at this stage but it will be 25 mm longer than the Juke. Styling-wise, one can see the influence the 208 has had on its SUV sibling, particularly in the grille and the head and taillights. Of course the ride height and driving position have been raised, and a rugged bodykit takes the place of the smoother lines of the 208. Black bumpers, sills and roof rails further enhance the 2008’s SUV cred. It rolls on 17-inch alloys wrapped in ‘Mud&Snow’ tyres.
The car will only be available with front-wheel drive, but off-road ability will be enhanced through a clever traction control system similar to that of the 3008, dubbed Grip Control. Engines will come from the 208 line-up, including a new turbocharged 1,2-litre three-cylinder petrol motor. The diesel line-up will include 1,4s and 1,6s.
